Identity Verification through the Document Verification Service (DVS)

How Stockspot uses the DVS

As part of our client onboarding and ongoing identity verification processes, Stockspot uses the Australian Government's Document Verification Service (DVS) to verify the authenticity of identity documents you provide to us. The DVS is a secure, real-time online system authorised under the Identity Verification Services Act 2023 (Cth) that enables us to confirm that the details on your identity documents match the records held by the relevant document issuing agency. This information is provided to you before we seek your consent to verify your identity using the Document Verification Service.

When you provide us with an identity document (such as your Australian passport, driver's licence, birth certificate, citizenship certificate, or Medicare card), we will submit the identification information from that document to the DVS through an approved Gateway Service Provider. The DVS checks the information against the records of the document issuing agency and returns a match or no-match result to us. The DVS does not provide us with any additional personal information about you and only returns a match or no-match result.

Our legal obligations

Stockspot is required to verify your identity and the use of government related identifiers for DVS verification is reasonably necessary for us to verify your identity for the purposes of our functions and activities as a financial services provider, consistent with Australian Privacy Principle 9.2(a). Stockspot is also subject to the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles in its handling of your personal information collected through the DVS process.

Your rights in relation to DVS verification

You have the right to be informed about how your identification information is collected and used through the DVS process. We will obtain your express and informed consent before using your identification information to conduct a DVS verification.

You may request access to, or correction of, any personal information we hold about you in connection with a DVS verification at any time by contacting our Privacy Officer at compliance@stockspot.com.au.

Consequences of not consenting to DVS verification

If you choose not to consent to DVS verification, we may be unable to verify your identity electronically. As we are legally required to verify your identity under the AML/CTF Act before providing you with our financial services, this may result in a delay in processing your application or, in some cases, our inability to open an account or provide services to you. In such circumstances, we will provide you with an alternative method of identity verification, which may include manual verification processes that may take longer to complete.
