Stockspot's Fat Cat Funds Report is the largest analysis of Australian superannuation and managed funds. This is the 5th year we've produced the report and this year we've looked at a record 4,000 funds to assess how they have performed.
We believe it's important for Australians to be getting the right advice about super. After all, we spend more as a nation each year on superannuation fees than we do on Christmas!
When comparing funds within an investment category (e.g. Australian shares, balanced, growth), we found that fees explain the majority of differences between their performance. Some fund managers can do better than others over short periods of time, but our analysis found that less than 1 in 25 were able to consistently beat their peers by a noticeable margin over 5 years. Consumers would benefit greatly if they simply looked for an super investment mix consistent with their timeframe to retirement and the lowest possible fees.
Stockspot's Fat Cat Fund ratings are based solely on statistical criteria relating to a fund's past performance vs their peer group.
We analysed Australian domiciled funds with available data on performance and fees.
Fat Cat Funds warrant special attention because they have consistently underperformed their peers over a period of 5 years.
We find that if you are in a fund charging more than 1.5% per year, it is at high risk of becoming a Fat Cat Fund.
We have only compared funds that have existed for at least 5 years and have made data available on performance and fees.

Stockspot's Fat Cat Fund ratings are based solely on statistical criteria relating to a fund's past performance. We have only considered Australian domiciled superannuation funds and managed funds that have existed for at least 5 years and have made data available on performance and fees. We have categorised funds using their underlying asset allocation, with the grouping of mixed asset funds based on the how much of the fund's portfolio is invested in growth assets (shares and property). Full details of the methodology used and fund categorisation can be found in the report.
